Chapter Eight

I woke the next morning to the sound of a small bell chiming softly from the stairs leading down the tower.

"Your highness?" a voice called. "Are you awake?"

I rubbed my eyes and flopped my arm on the bed next to me. Dralyx wasn't there. I got up and looked around, my hair a tangled mess.

"He's not here," I called back.

"May I come up, your highness? Apologies for shouting. A new door is on its way. I didn't want to intrude."

I recognized the voice. It was the matronly servant from the bathing room. "Come up," I said and slumped on the soft black satin sheets.

It was well past dawn, but it didn't matter. I wasn't in the village anymore. I could do what I wanted. I faintly remembered vowing that I would run away. Dralyx even said that I could walk free.

I snorted. Yeah, right. After last night, he'd never let me go. We had bonded so deep that no words were needed. I knew that he needed me, and he knew that I needed him. That was just how it was. Alpha and omega, together. He was an asshole and a monstrous dragon, but I already missed him.

"Bless your heart," I said, as I saw the matronly servant come in with a large tray of food. There were beads of sweat on her brow from the effort of carrying it up all the stairs. "Put it down anywhere," I said.

She placed it on the bench at the foot of the bed then straightened up while stifling a sigh.

Suddenly, I realized that I was naked and quickly wrapped myself in a bedsheet. But I didn't blush. Somehow, I felt that I wouldn't be blushing again anytime soon. I didn't care if everyone knew what Dralyx and I did together. We were mated.

The trays held cakes and tarts, sweet puddings, grapes, and other treats. There was fresh sparkling water and two different types of juice. I ate my fill while the servant watched.

"Have some too," I said.

"Oh, I couldn't. I already ate," she said.

I smiled, knowing the game she was playing. "Here, have this." I took a kind of pastry I had never seen before and handed it to her. She accepted it with hesitation.

"Go on, take a bite," I insisted. She did so, looking guilty the whole time.

"This food is meant for you, your highness. I eat these all the time. It's not like we are given gruel to eat."

I laughed. "That's good to know. Why do you keep calling me your highness?"

She cleared her throat. "Well, if you and Dralyx are partners, that must mean you are indeed an omega. The feast tonight is in your honor. He will name you as queen."

It was so much information that it wasn't worth thinking about. "Oh," I said and grabbed another treat.

"Yes," the servant continued. "Dralyx is overseeing the preparations. He sent me to wake you. He would like your input as soon as possible."
